It is the capital of the region Provence Pays de la Loire and of the Departement Loire Atlantique. The city is located on the River Loire near the Atlantic Ocean. Nantes is divided into 11 cantons. The name Nantes comes from the Celtic name "Namneti". Namneti was founded in around 70 BC and conquered by Julius Ceasar in 56 BC. In 1532 Nantes became part of France as the Duchy of Brittany was annexed by the Kingdom of France. Today the Port has a strong impact on the life of the city. |
